Dear all , I know it is not a Francis Barnett … It is an Ambassador popular 197 cc like a James ML 125 , my problem is this - the forks are the pressed steel jobbies in a straight line the bike is fine but when I turn a bend or corner they wobble , I have tightened the steering head bearings , the links are all tight and the wheel bearings are good and there is no play , what do you think ? with thanks , david

There should be a friction damper on the r/hand side of the Webb pressed steel forks on these bikes,is it there, is it too tight ? has it got the friction plates in it ? other thna that you have to be loking at the trueness of the wheel, fitment of the tyre, and general wear to bushings and bearings ?

front forks Empty Possible cause

Check your wheels for alignment, use a straight edge ( plank of wood or similar) and check the front and back wheels are aligned.
Can also be done with a piece of string tied tight about 6" off the ground, make sure it touches rear tyre front and back, if tyres are the same size it should also touch the front at leading and trailing edge, or miss both by the difference in tyre size if front tyre is narrower than front.
Sometimes if badly out looking along the edge of the rear tyre from behind mis-alignment can be seen

It seems that my forks are out . or at least what I would call the top and bottom yolks are a bit out , so what is the best way to re align them , do have to take them off to do this ? or just loosen everything and sort it out that way , with thanks david ...

Well the bike that went to sleep in 1965 went for its first decent run today 40 miles ! must just add that the forks are now fine but I feel rather sorry for the chaps who used them every day for transport as comfort was at the bottom of the list , but the 197cc engine can really move and the brakes are actually much better than you might think , again thanks for all the help , david
