Franci Barnett Falcon 67 4 speedAlbion gearbos Empty Franci Barnett Falcon 67 4 speedAlbion gearbos

Hi Guys, I have a 1954 Falcon 67 fitted with the 4 speed Albion gearbox, whilst the box changes gears and works as it should, I have a problem with 4th gear which seems to have a gear ratio to high for the engine to cope with. My machine pulls strongly through the first three gears when put into 4th there appears to be a massive jump in gear ratio's with the engine losing revs leaving me with virtually no pulling power, even staying in third until just past 45mph I still noticeable lose engine revs and pulling power, so basically stuck at 45 mph, is it possible to rectify this problem by changing final drive and rear wheel sprockets ? any help will be much appreciated.

4th gear on either a 3 speed gearbox or a 4 speed will be 1 to 1 ratio, so if it is not pulling 4th i would suggest you have the overall gearing incorrect ? or the engine is down on power ?
so check engine sprocket, gearbox sprocket and rear wheel drive to see if engine and gearbox sprocket are bigger than standard or rear wheel is smaller as all of these situations will raise the gearing.
Is your gearbox the standard road gearbox ( serial No starts with an "S"), or a trials gearbox ( serial no starts with a "V") as the trials wide ratio has a bigger step from 3rd to 4th

Hi John, many thanks for your reply I have checked the gearbox which is stamped S RAO 736, so appears to be a standard one, I will take it apart and check number of sprocket teeth of the engine, and gearbox, I will need to find out what they should be as standard ?, kind regards. Peter

On the 3 speed gearbox they are 23 T on the engine and 17 T on the gearbox, the rear wheel is normally 44 T

i would expect the 4 speed to be the same ?

I have just found a Falcon 70 manual which was available with the 4 speed gearbox , with same engine and rear wheel size and this lists
Engine sprocket E7800 ( 23T)
Gearbox either E8868 ( 17 T x .195" wide) or E9016 ( 17T x .295" wide)
rear wheel 44 T

so i would imagine the 67 to be the same ?, as you have a STD ratio road gearbox and if the gearing is correct, i can only assume that the engine is down on power and will not pull top gear ?

Hi John, Many thanks for your reply, I will check all the sprockets for number of teeth, and if they are as they should be from standard, then onto engine checks, timing, carburation etc. kind regards. Peter
