Hi Folks I wonder if you can help with my problem.

After a year long rebuild and obtaining an age related plate (thankyou john) My engine starts easily when cold but loses power and eventually stalls/fails to start when warm.

I hopefully have the pilot jet about right.The engine has been fully rebuilt with new bearings, piston, crancase seals, electrics etc . I have good compression both cold and hot (even when it fails to run ). I do however note the plug is very dry when it should be wet from failed attempts to get it going.

My hunch is that something is expanding and allowing air to be drawn in to the crankcase once hot.
Any suggestions as to common areas I should be inspecting/concentrating on or any other tips as to what might be going wrong

Hi Ed how far can you ride before it starts to die ? when it stop are you getting fuel to carb ? may be blocked tank filter, have you still got a good spark when hot ? these little engines can be a prob to start when hot if the magnets in the fly wheel are not fully magnetized , check points are not to tight , is the air vent hole in the fuel tank cap clear ? so creating a vacuum in tank if you need to try a different jet or carb parts i have a few bit and bobs you are more then welcome to try if you want just pm me i am local regards Alan

Two things to check
1 make sure the vent hole is clear in the petrol tank cap, it this is blocked it can cause a partial vacuum and stop fuel flowing.
2 Check fuel needle is working correctly ie when float rises it closes the needle to stop fuel flowing, as fuel is used the float lowers and the needle allows fuel to flow ,

Hi John and Alan. Thankyou for your tips and help. I think Im making some progress. I pressure tested the crankcase and no evidence of leaks but put some ptfe around the carb manifold and the this caused changes in revs when restarting which suggested a leak….possible fault 1 ?


When I left the exhaust nut slightly undone (accidently) it started easier so I decoked the very blocked exhaust.... possible fault 2 ?

Fault 3 ... Despite fitting a new coil and condenser I wonder if one of these are faulty and are failing under compression load. When I reduced the spark plug gap down (18 to to 16 thou) there was a big improvement. I was able to do a 8 mile ride rather than limping 300m but hot starting is still erratic. Thankyou for the offer re spares offer Alan but I have ordered a new condenser and coil and see if it that sorts it.

If the coil is an old one it would be advisable to replace it. They can become affected by the heat of a warm engine and break down causing hard starting when hot.
Fixed a similar problem on my 13D.
