I am working on a Plover which I think looking at the FB history book is a 1957/58.
I rubbed down the head stock could not find a number. So I got the frame put in an acid bath to remove many layers of paint. Still no number or signs of either a stamped number or a label. As I have not got a log book I an stuck. Is there any way I can apply for a registration if I have not got a frame number? Is there anywhere the frame number could be?

unfortunaely this was a badge engineered James model and they used the rivet-on tag on the l/hand side of the headstock, another crappy idea from James !! the water got behind the tag and rotted the rivets off, and the tag came off.
Your best bet is to find another scrap frame with the tag still on it, you will be looking for a frame No beginning W****,Y**** or Z***** 1956,7,8 years, then either use the frame , or just the tag?

Thanks for the answer, I believe the bike was a Francis Barnett originally going by layers of paint. There are no rivet holes.

Even if I could get a damaged frame, I could take the number from the frame and have it stamped on mine. Would the club have a problem with that?

Does any member have a spare or damaged Plover frame?

You will not find one of these bikes with a stamped on number, it will be on a rivetted-on plate, you would need to remove the plate and rivet the number to your frame, or better still use the front frame tube with the plate on.
If you stamp it onto the frame , it will immediately flag up as fake, likewise if you make your own plate and use stamps different to the factory stamps.
Any other FB stand alone model will have the frame No stamped into the headstock, but not the James badge engineered models, post 1955, Plover 73,78,86,95, Model 96, Cruiser 91 etc

It will be the same, but you will have to have a James rather than a FB as the numbers are different

I did contact the guy but he wants the buyer to pick it up. He is south of Bristol and I am Peterhead / Fraserburgh area.

I did speak to some who had a Log Book for a 197 FB. Not sure about it, I do not the in's and out's of that.

Also spoke to someone with the frame with a label but the number started 11 which does match the numbers for James or FB as John says above.

Just now I am thinking about just building the bike just for the interest / hobby. I am a bit disheartened. I did expect to find the number under the many coats of paint.

I have got the engine unseized, new rims (Jap) and I have enjoyed my time spent on the bike. So looks like it maybe a working ornament eventually.

My first bike was a James Cadet (AMC engine) so this project has been like rolling the clock back 53 years.

It was probably J1 (not 11) and he was misreading it ??
J1 would be a 98cc James Comet or if there was a 5 after the J1 to make J15 it would have been a James Cadet.
