Hi All,
My name is Steven bell and live in Ottawa Canada. I am new to Francis Barnetts but not new to British bikes. I have picked up a 1959 Model 83 trials with two engines the bike looks quite complete and running but I will rebuild both motors. Both engines are 25C I have already ordered two gasket kits. So the next thing I need to do is try to post some photos as soon as I get the bike home. I will need to find a parts book so I will get in touch with Mike Daykin club librarian.
Thanks Steven in Ottawa

Hi Steve and welcome to both the FBOC and the forum.👍

I have enabled the facility to message other forum members for your new account, so if you search member Fletch from the menu at the top you will be able to pm him.

Alternatively, find a post from him and under his username on the right, click the icon of a man with pm next to it.

Regards,
JMc

1958 or 1959 who would be the best person to ask about dating? I have some paper work that says 58 and others say 59. As I read it the model year started in Aug 58 and ran to Aug 59 so if its made in sept 58 but is a model 59 is a 59?

Post  piston 197 on Fri Mar 22, 2019 7:35 pm

1959 Model 83 frames will be numbered ACT starting ACT12956 in September 1958, ( engine No 25C16303) they ran until frame No ACT14022 ( engine No.25C17125) finishing in August 1959 when they were replaced by the model 85 with frame No.s beginning BCT from October 1959
so either way they will be 1959 model years, but could be made in either 1958 or 1959

Yes that sounds likely, there is no sequence between engine and frame correalation as some 25C engines went into James, but yes that would suggest an early build in 1958, but technically a 1959 model

Post  piston 197 on Fri Mar 22, 2019 8:03 pm

If you subtract the first ACT frame number from the last one it will give a figure of numbers of model 83's made, ( 1056?) but will not include works bikes which had a different numbering system, but there are unlikely to be more than half a dozen of those?
engines will be harder to estimate as they continued up to 1960 with the 25C prefix and were fitted to both James and FB, from September 1961 onwards they were numbered M25C

Well I got a hold of Fletch and had a good chat and we will try to get together soon. We are still trying to get a parts book. If someone has one i am willing to pay for a copy so we can get going on the bikes

Cheers

New Member Empty parts book

Post  piston 197 on Sat Mar 23, 2019 5:14 am

There is no parts book for this model, as such, there was a suplement to the Cruiser 80 parts book, which does show some bits, but as far as am aware FB did not do a dedicated book for the 83

New Member Empty Toolbox

Post  piston 197 on Sat Mar 23, 2019 11:24 am

The toolbox is a round cylinder with one welded end cap and one loose one held with a leather strap, we had the toolbox lids made some years ago, you need 2 and make your own tube, i think there are some still left in clubstock, they are £9.50p each plus postage, available from me, the toolbox just bolts under the tank mountings with 2 bolts through it

What is the model bike you show with your name and does the club have a list of members and bikes? Someone in the club must have the same bike.

I have been looking at the piston! Should there something under the ring to stop them form turning in the barrel? If anyone has a model 83 I would love some good photos of all parts of the bike so I can fix what is needed and not screw up things that are not wrong. if you send me a PM I will give you my email address

There should be a small peg in each ring groove to stop the piston rings moving/ rotating
