rear - Speedo drive - Rear wheel Empty Speedo drive - Rear wheel

My speedo stopped working on my Falcon 81. Removing the cable at the speedo end showed no problems but I found that it is not rotating when the rear wheel is turned. I pulled the inner cable out of the outer and it is still in one piece and the square ends are good. Is the speedo gearbox prone to failure, and if yes is the fix a new drive or can they be repaired?

rear - Speedo drive - Rear wheel Empty speedo drive gearbox

Post  piston 197 on Thu Jan 17, 2019 12:39 pm

Steve yes they do wear out, they have a gear and worm gear to change the drive through 90 degrees and the unit fitted to the Falcon 81 is 2 to 1 ratio, any speedo gearbox with this ratio, providing it is the same handed ( they did top mounted cable and bottom mounted cable) it will yield the parts you need
The falcon 81 used the gearbox numbered 52283/64/7 for 1958/9 as did the other models with the exception of the Plovers, This drive was replaced for 1960 with BG5330/247

rear - Speedo drive - Rear wheel Empty speedo drives

Post  piston 197 on Sun Jan 20, 2019 5:32 pm

Neither of these will be any good , wrong size hole in the middle 3/4"( needs to be 9/16") wrong ratio 21 to 10 ( needs to be 2 to 1) and wrong hand so will rotate in opposite direction . Bottom cable entry ( needs to be top cable entry)

Now if you had a 1972 BSA B50 they would be just the thing ! as both are 5330/104 which are correct for that machine !

Hi John,

Could you tell me the correct Speedo drive and is it top or bottom feed for the Trials 92 please?

rear - Speedo drive - Rear wheel Empty Model 92 speedo details

Post  piston 197 on Wed Jan 23, 2019 7:07 pm

Peter, the Trials 92 uses the same Speedo gearbox BG5330/247 as every other bike in the 1964 FB range from the Fulmar to the Sports twin, i believe this to be a bottom cable exit.
The speedo was SC1102/06 ( "D" shape chronometric) and the cable length was 4'6"
